Navigation comes to the iPhone

Although smartphone navigation apps have been around for a couple of years, the iPhone 3GS looks to make them more popular. We completed a test of the Gokivo navigation app; AT&T offers its own app; and later this year TomTom will add a navigation app to the iTunes store. The apps available so far will work on any iPhone upgraded to the 3.0 operating system, and will require a $9.99 monthly subscription. As you usually carry a phone around, an iPhone navigation app will be generally more available than a portable navigation device. But portable devices have bigger screen sizes and don't require a monthly fee. An iPhone will also have to download its maps as it goes, where a portable stores them locally. Factory-installed navigation systems are another choice, but they have their own pros and cons. At this point, no segment is likely to kill off the others, but watch for advances in wireless technology over the next five years, which might tip the balance.
