The sky is failing; GAO warns GPS satellite program needs funding and leadership

Matthew Miller: Some of the most popular Christmas gifts the last couple of years were personal navigation devices providing GPS data to consumers. Just about every smartphone today comes with a GPS receiver and different applications that support mapping and navigation. Location-based applications are also becoming more and more popular as GPS becomes an integral part of people's everyday lives. However, the convenience and utility of GPS may be impacted over the next year or two as the satellites circling our planet begin to expire while funding and management issues keep replacement satellites grounded.
