Volkswagen Passat fuel cell car
Amidst all the recent electric car hype, Volkswagen reminded us of its fuel cell efforts by bringing a fleet of hydrogen-powered Passats to California. These cars were built in China and used at the Beijing Olympics. VW lured us out with a test-drive in the cars and outlined its alternative fuel strategy.
Fuel cell cars get driven by electric motors, just like a battery electric car, but rely on a hydrogen reaction in the fuel cell for electricity. The only emission from these cars is water vapor. The driving experience in the fuel cell Passat is similar to that of a battery electric car, but you will get greater range with the fuel cell. And where a pure electric car is very quiet, the fuel cell's compressor makes an audible whine in the Passat.
Although Honda and GM already lease fuel cell vehicles to select test groups, real production cars that you can buy from a dealer are still a long way off. The Passat we drove was an unrefined research vehicle.
