| This week in Car Tech | | Wayne Cunningham CNET.com | | Driving diesel Last week we spent a few days driving a BMW 123d, a car you can only buy in Europe. Bosch, which makes components for diesel engines, brought the car to the U.S. and loaned it to us for a few days. And what we found was a very practical and fun car that would serve equally well as an everyday commuter and a weekend sports car. With 295 pound-feet of torque, it had plenty of get-up-and-go, with acceleration that continued to pull at high speeds, yet its average fuel economy is about 45 mpg (we only got 42 mpg, but we did a lot of acceleration testing). Although you can't get the 123d, we previously reviewed cars by VW, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW that you can get here, and generally found high mileage coupled with strong performance.
